Would you still be happy to allow Fido to lick your face, eat off your plate or share your bed if you knew his little secret? Health experts would tell you that you would probably be better off health wise if you allowed him to! In fact, the hygiene hypothesis developed back in 1989 suggested that the rising incidence of allergic disease, such as asthma or allergies, was actually linked to reduced exposure to germs through declining family sizes, more limited exposure to animals, and higher general standards of cleanliness.

Over the past 20 years, DNA sequencing has allowed us to study and identify the myriads of microbes that live in our body, namely our digestive system, skin and mouth. This has led to hundreds of studies that have linked our bowel organisms, or microbiome, to an ever growing list of diseases, including autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, among others.
